April is Poetry Month. The kids know that. We worked on poems all month. We had a little poem book and today they did a poetry read for the kindergartners. What they don’t know are all the lessons tucked inside the Poetry Reading today as we end this special month of poetry. The poems are filled with sight words so they were practicing reading each time they read a poem. They acted out their poem so they had to work together on the motions, the rhythm and the “one voice” of the poem. They had to learn to face their audience and enunciate the words. The poems were about things kids love: recess, friends, wishing, pretending, etc. so to them it was just fun. To teachers, inside the Poetry Read, we tucked lessons in reading, teamwork and performing…but don’t tell the kids. They just think it was great fun.
