Mondays are excused for being Monday. How many times does some thing go wrong or seem a bit quirky and we pass it off by saying “It’s a Monday.”? We never excuse it by saying “It’s a Tuesday.” Or “What do you expect? It’s Thursday.” But when things aren’t quite right we are quick to excuse it…or at least explain it by saying “It’s a Monday.”
Today was a Monday and from the beginning it didn’t see quite right.
- I couldn’t do my usual 4:00 a.m. work out because of a sore hip. (Does that me sound really old to say “sore hip”?).
- I slept in a ½ hour later which meant a different time for my shower and different time for my breakfast. The day felt weird already and it wasn’t 5:30 yet.
- Then came the message about the 2-hour delay because of the fog. In 24 years at St. Gerard School I can’t remember a 2-hour delay. Other schools have them but we never do. Until today. Monday.
- I went to school at my usual time trying to get some semblance to the day. I was feeling guilty because I left school last evening and still had lots to do for the week. I told my husband I needed a snow day to catch up. I think I jinxed something.
- I was getting lots done at school and playing with Bessie but this week I have pit duty (morning carline monitor) . So I was about to head down to the parking lot and I realized it was 8:30 not 9:30 and I still had to wait an hour. That felt really weird.
-The kids finally arrived and I had moved their desks for October…except one. One poor little girl was still in the same place so we had to do a switch-a-roo.
-It was the first week for our star student except I had the wrong name on the star student board. I told the kids last week if I can’t be more focused and stop mixing up those two boys than I will have to put my star in the warning box for not making good choices. My star is in the warning box.
- I worked a lot of hours at school this weekend. I was there on Saturday, Sunday morning and Sunday evening. I had plenty of time to make things right for today but when I went to go through the schedule for the day I still had Friday’s schedule up. I had changed the date, the jobs, the Reader of the Day certificate and the WOW word but the schedule was wrong. That wasn’t all.
- Speaking of WOW word…I had the WOW word in big letters on the board spelled wrong. It’s not so incredible to spell that word without a “C”. Sometimes Monday is inredible!
- We had just worked on some reading papers and it was time for recess and lunch. No prayer service...no cracker break...no normal Monday.
- I couldn’t go out to play at recess because my name was in the warning box. (Kids can always go out no matter where their name is but for me I had to stay in to make better choices about focusing.)
- The computer froze during math on the smart board.
- I forgot to collect the September journals so I had to do that at the end of the day after gym. I bring the journals home and read them, write some love notes in them and then get the journal awards ready for tomorrow. As I collected them I was glad it was the end of the day. Forgetting to collect them was one more “mistake” that made the day quirky and different and weird. It made the day a Monday.
And as I sit here and type this blog and put the finishing touches on it, I realize that I left the journals at school. Even though it’s the end of the school day, this Monday lives on for a few more hours.
From the change in the wake up time to the no play date at recess to wrong names and forgotten journals…it’s been a Monday. I am heading back to school now to pick up the journals. I know tomorrow will be a better day because…it's been a Monday and tomorrow...it’s a Tuesday.
