A Winter Gift For Mary - Page 88 Care Corner Photo Journal - Volume 5 It's my favorite religion lesson. I am not going to lie. There are so many moving and powerful religion lessons in first grade...but this is my favorite. When we start school in August the Rosary Garden is in full bloom and full of life. Winter robs the Rosary Garden of her greenery...her flowers...her color...and almost her life. So...as a gift to Mary...every winter...the Care Corner kids decorate the Rosary Garden with snow angels for her. Tuesday...just when the temperatures crept above zero we took our religion class outside to the Rosary Garden...we made beautiful snow angels as a winter gift for Mary. I hope she loved them. Let It Snow! - Page 87 Care Corner Photo Journal - Volume 5 Just in time for Winter Week, our 5th grade Pen Pals helped us make snowflakes. It's almost magical. You have to remember being a kid...folding the paper...making the cuts and...the best part...unfolding a beautiful snowflake. #winterweek #letitsnow S'more Memories - Page 86 Care Corner Photo Journal - Volume 5 And just like that Camp Week is over and Camp Care Corner is "closed" for another year. But we made more memories before it was over. We wrote camp stories, read books by the camp fire and then had some Camp Day fun with movies and a special afternoon treat. Today was the last day of Camp Care Corner but it was filled with fun, friends and "s'more memories". Flashlight Dancing - Page 85 Care Corner Photo Journal - Volume 5 Camp Week M&M (Music and Movement)...made even better with our Flashlight Dancing! Ohhhhh...what a feeling...when you're dancin' on the ceiling (and the smart board). Saint Lessons...The Best Part - Page 85
Care Corner Photo Journal - Volume 5 Maybe the best part is Tim giving up his lunch hour to teach us the saints. (It's his little sacrifice...his way of giving back.) Or...maybe the best part is how he helps the saints relate to our lives: pray to St. Francis Cabrini to understand God's will, St. Martin de Porres for racism and dog shelters...to St. Thomas Aquinas for learning and to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton for the privilege of going to a Catholic School. Or...maybe it's the questions they ask at the end of each lesson. (Why does she have a cross?...and Why is he holding a book?...and Why are the animals there?) Or...maybe the best part is the Saint Game and how competitive it has become. (St. Gerard team beat the Falcon team today). Or...maybe the best part is how Tim shows us something special each lesson. (Today he showed us a book with St. Thomas Aquinas.) Or maybe it is how he ends each saint lesson with a prayer in Chinese so they learn to appreciate other cultures and languages. Or...maybe the best part is the 28 saints they have already learned and how they are becoming saint experts and how their hearts are becoming closer to Jesus...THAT is the best part. (Actually...the best "fun" part is at the end of the lesson when Tim says goodbye and before hanging up he tells me "I love you." and they think he is talking to them and they yell "love you too." Who am I to tell them any differently?) Happy Campers - Page 83
Care Corner Photo Journal - Volume 5 Today was the first day of Camp Care Corner. We got our camp packets, had a special camp treat, tried out our new tent and did some flashlight work with journals, spelling, camp vocabulary and camp stories. It was a good first day in Camp Care Corner. A dad sent me an email this morning and told me that his daughter was so excited to come to school today because of Camp Week. That is why I came up with Camp Week all those years ago. It was purely for the fact to help them be excited about learning and to have a roomful of happy campers. Here's to Day 2... Little Leonardos - Page 81 Care Corner Photo Journal - Volume 5 Thanks to amazing World of Art parents and Leonardo da Vinci, these Care Corner Kids became little Leonardos on Friday. They made their own clay, added coloring and seasoning and then got busy being sculptors. They created some masterpieces...and some special memories. Screen Chomp - Doubles...Triple Practice- Page 80 Care Corner Photo Journal - Volume 5 Screen Chomp is a fun little app we use on our iPads. You can write, record your voice and play it back. We used it this week to practice doubles. 1. Write the problem. 2. Read the math sentence and recorded it. 3. Play it back. Which makes this Screen Chomp session on doubles...triple practice. And double the fun...maybe triple it. TOMS Boxes - Beyond One For One - Page 79 Care Corner Photo Journal - Volume 5 I love my TOMS shoes. (I am convinced they were made just for teachers.) The TOMS stands for "tomorrow's shoes" because for every pair you buy they donate a pair to a child in need. "One for One". I have LOTS of TOMS shoes and many TOMS boxes. I use the "one for one" boxes for independent activities in reading. There are boxes with letters, words, puzzles, magnets, etc. all to help enrich their language, phonics and reading. Today's TOMS groups were even more special as they completed each skill and added even more. One girl used her magnetic letters to write a "love note", one little girl built the whole ABC caterpillar, another was thrilled to complete the whole word puzzle and one little boy took extra time helping her pick up. Even though they worked alone...we all shared in the joy of learning which made today's TOMS activities...beyond one for one. |
