It’s one of those memories that stays with you forever. It is kind of burned into your mind…and your heart. I remember sitting in that church pew with my grandma (We called her Nanny.) It was Palm Sunday and the day she taught me how to make the crosses from the palms. I am sure there was more than one lesson. It probably took me a 2 or three Palm Sundays to get it down just right but still…she sat there in that pew and taught me how to make them. And although the details aren’t clear, the memory of Nanny and me in that pew is very clear. I remember being little and loving how they looked and how I kept it out all year. So every year I have made them for the first graders to decorate their cubbies for Holy Week. This year I made them while we were in the car going to see Brooklyn. As I filled the cup holders with finished crosses, I wondered if someday I will get to teach my granddaughter. And I thought of Nanny and that first Palm Cross lesson and I made each one with a memory of her…for the kids.
