It’s not about the kids. That may seem a strange thing to say…especially on Halloween. Especially coming from a 1st grade teacher. Lots of times it is about the kids. But today…it wasn’t really about the kids. Today grown-ups graced Care Corner. Lots of them. Our walls were filled to the brim with kids…and with grown-ups. Today it was about the grown-ups who support the work we do…the fun we have…and the learning that takes place within the walls of Care Corner. Today was about a dad…a firefighter…who offered to come in and talk to the kids about fire safety. He not only offered to come talk to the kids on his day off…he offered to have the other first grade class come too. Today was about a teacher from Germany who is visiting a first grader’s family and she offered to come in and teach us about Germany. Today was about ALL the parents who came to the Halloween party and those who sent in items for the party so the kids could do a craft, play pumpkin golf, Halloween bingo, a Halloween game and have lots of treats…including the mom who organized it all and had the spreadsheet to prove it. Today was about the grandpa who stood in the back and watch the party swirl around him. Today was about the grandma who came dressed up as the tooth fairy and brought treats. Today was about the dad who came dressed as Batman. Today was even about two jr. high students who help in our classroom on Friday and the sat and read with the kids. And today was about the parents who stayed and watched our Halloween play and laughed and clapped. And today was about the parents who stayed and danced Footloose with us. We dance Footloose every Friday to celebrate the hard work we did all week. But today as so many parents danced with us it felt like it was a celebration of grown ups and all they do for us in Care Corner. Because today…it wasn’t about the kids.
