The snow day stole Wacky Wednesday from us. Well…maybe not stole…but canceled. It’s Dr. Seuss week in Care Corner so naturally to honor his silliness and celebrate one of his books, we were going to have Wacky Wednesday yesterday. We have been planning it for a few weeks. The kids kept adding ideas that weren’t really feasible…but still I loved that they tried. Wacky is one thing. Crazy wacky is another.
We already had some things in place. One page in our Dr. Seuss packet was stapled upside down. We were going to do math in the morning groups and reading in the afternoon. (How’s that for livin’ on the edge?). We were going to turn our desks around to the back of room and we would all go by our middle names on Wacky Wednesday. I was Mrs. Jean. And...they don’t know this yet but I was going to mix up the groups so they would be with different “stars”. Mia would be with Marie, Keaton, Thomas and Clark. (All middle names.) And…we were going to use Photo Booth to take wacky pictures and write wacky stories. The day was going to be full of wacky-ness. Until the snow. Until the snow stole Wacky Wednesday.
Not that Thursday can’t be wacky…but it couldn’t be. We already had work to make up from the snow day. We had a reading word evaluation. We had to prepare for a test on clocks tomorrow. We had parents coming in for morning groups and afternoon groups and all 8 groups couldn’t be full of wacky fun. Except for…the one Wacky Wednesday activity that didn’t get canceled. Wacky Hats!! Since we were doing Wacky Hats they might as well read Wacky Wednesday in Book Club today instead of usual chapter books. And from the Wacky Wednesday book group with a parent they went to Wacky Hats with Mrs. McKerr.
Mrs. McKerr had already prepared all the supplies and gotten the project ready for Wacky Wednesday. There was no use wasting all that prep time. Surely the math computer group she was supposed to do this afternoon could be switch to Wacky Hats! At first glance these Wacky Hats don’t appear to be anything special. It was just extra border for bulletin boards made into crowns and then there were pipe cleaners, cupcake wrappers, foamie stick-ons and “stuff” to complete their wacky creation. Who knew first graders could have so much fun with wacky-ness?
As they emerged from Mrs. McKerr’s office it became an informal modeling of the hats. Pipe cleaners going every which way. Cupcake wrappers made into eyeballs or stuck on the ends of the pipe cleaners. There were jewels and foamies and Wacky Hats galore. There were discussions about designs and even compliments about the degree of wacky-ness. And there were smiles and giggles.
As we lined up to go home at end of the day there were even Wacky Hats placed on top of stocking caps. The “fashion show” continued as we walked to the car line. So did the smiles and giggles. We borrowed the Wacky Wednesday idea from Dr. Seuss and then the snow day stole Wacky Wednesday from us. But…as left for the day with Wacky Hats proudly on their heads and pipe cleaners flapping in the wind, it made me realize we stole Wacky Wednesday back. Happy Wacky Wednesday…errr Thursday…to everyone!
