“The Last Pew” promise is a special one. I don’t make many promises to my students or even my family. I am careful not to make promises. But the one promise I do make is to the Care Corner Kids about this time each year. I promise them that when they are in second grade I will be there when they make their First Communion. We are blessed with a special faith journey in first grade together and I want to be there for this special sacrament. So I promise them that I will sit in the last pew to watch them walk into church for that special First Eucharist mass. Sometimes, a year later, they forget that promise. But sometimes when I see them in the hallway or at lunch they smile and say “Last pew, right?”. So tomorrow morning I will go to church really early to stake my claim for my seat in that last pew. And I will watch last year’s Care Corner Kids (and all the second graders) walk into church and witness their First Communion Day. And, just think, next year it will be these Care Corner Kids making their First Communion as I watch from...the last pew.
