You have to know your audience. Authors know that. Speakers know that. And teachers know that. You have to be aware of who you are trying to reach. And sometimes you have to update. I love snow. It’s not really a secret. Every year we do a snowman project. We usually read the book “Snowballs” and see all the different characters they make out of snow. Snowmen…snowdogs…snowcats…snowbears. Lots of different snow characters. Then to expand on the story the kids create their own character. Mine was Snow Pooh and one year a kid did Snow Elvis (seriously). We always did the snow characters with lick’em, stick’em packing peanuts for snow. Until this year. This year I realized sometimes you have to update. Our “character snowmen” had to be updated to this year’s class…this year’s “audience”. So many of them love the “Frozen” books. So instead of snow characters we went with Olaf…the snowman from Frozen. They were so excited. Tucked inside this Olaf project was a little science (a book about winter), a little writing (use a WOW word to describe Olaf) and a lot of tough cutting. It was truly a fine motor skill activity. They worked so hard. And they were so proud. It turned out to be a great project. Sometimes you have to know your audience. Sometimes you have to update.
